In a ceremony held on October 10 in Bangladesh, writer Fernando Cabrera was recognized with the Jury's Award in the 2023 version of the Sahitto literary award, of great prestige in the East, which, under the direction of poet Tareq Samin, summons writers from all over the world. Participating authors must be nominated by accredited academic or publishing institutions, with a professional and creative resume, as well as a representative sample of their creative work, poetic in this case, written in the English language.
The jury panel was chaired by Taiwanese writer Dr. Tzemin Ition Tsai, and was composed of Italian-American poet Antonia Petrone, Japanese artist and poet Maki Starfield, Swiss poet Franco Barbato, Argentine poet Kari Krenn, Indian writer Neelam Saxena Chandra, Italian poet Michela Zanarella, Iraqi-American poet Faleeha Hassam, and Bangladeshi poet and artist Sahila M Simi.
Fernando Cabrera, a native and resident of Santiago de los Caballeros, is poet, essayist, visual artist and composer. His works have won several national awards for poetry and literary essays. He has a PhD in Spanish Studies: Linguistics and Literature, Master in Business Administration, he also has a degree in Systems and Computer Engineering. He presides the International Festival Arte Vivo and co-directs the World Poetry Day Festival. As a cultural manager he was president of Casa de Arte, member of the National Council of Culture and active member of the Dominican Academy of Language. One of his poems was included in the anthology The Polaris Trilogy: Poems for the Moon, a collection compiled and edited by Joyce Brinkman, Joe Heithaus, Jessica Reed and Barry Harris, which was released on January 23, 2023 by the publisher Brick Street Poetry Inc, which is part of the Lunar Codex project, founded and nurtured by Filipino-Canadian physicist and writer Samuel Peralta, and will be sent in a time capsule aboard NASA's next manned flight as part of Space X Astrobotic Technologies' Griffin Lander, which is scheduled to depart for the Moon's South Pole.
